Seen that, been there done that. Copy your data or image the drive so you can mount it later after a install to get your data back. But sounds like the registry is messed up. Format and re-install. After you patch the PC and get everything current for security patching, image it so you have a restore CD to come back to. Then go from there. But agree with Jstear, you are only spinning your wheels in trying to figure out what is messed up in the registry.
You'll save yourself lots of time and you'll know everything is healthy. The first application you should install is antivirus. Try a restore point before the known infection if you can, it might work.
One thing you probably already checked but I didn't see in your post is that you double-checked proxies. Lots of viruses install proxies. Yes, re-install would have been faster but as i posted, they had some programs that would be lost. Now it runs Firefox and MS securtiy essentials. DNS server problems can cause issues such as preventing some web pages from loading or causing all web browsing to fail completely. After reading this article, you should be able to:. You can visualize that, at minimum, this is what a DNS Server database contains. Websites names and the IP addresses. In this example, these are actual good IP's for Google. Phone books cross reference names to numbers.
DNS servers do the same. It's only real purpose is to make browsing the Internet easier for people. People like to pull up websites using names. Computers like to pull up websites using IP address numbers. Names, unlike numbers, are easier for people to remember. That does not change the fact that computers networks still insist on IP address numbers. The solution is DNS servers. DNS servers are servers on the Internet that do the cross-referencing between the two to satisfy both the network and people.
DNS servers are like the phone books of the Internet. DNS works out of your view, behind the scenes. Before we do, just for good measure, verify that you can not pull up Google. However, I could not get the computer to communicate with my network. I have updated the computer but still can't get it to communicate with my network. And so that is why I was asking about the modem ISP connection. I was thinking of just updating with SP3 and then shipping it back to his house and let him try the ISP software. It might just get him going. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I have gone through Internet Options menus.
I am lost as to what to try next.
